What’s Brewing: How to Make Halloween Mug Cakes

Listen up, my pretties!

Halloween is almost here, and with a few easy tricks, you can make the perfect treats for your favorite little monsters. In fact, you can have something sweet and spooky brewing in only ONE minute: Halloween mug cakes!

Now Tastefully Simple’s Classy Chocolate Pound Cake Mix and Absolutely Almond Pound Cake Mix have always been two of my favorite all-time desserts. But did you know that you can transform them into microwavable mug cakes? It’s so simple, too!

How to Make ‘Em: Easy as 1-2-3

1. Combine 1 package Classy Chocolate Pound Cake Mix OR Absolutely Almond Pound Cake Mix with 1 (16 ounce) package of angel food cake mix.

Store in a large storage container or gallon-size resealable plastic bag to enjoy whenever you feel like a mug cake. (Seriously, it makes a ton – you’ll have a perfect stash for whenever you need a pick-me-up!)

2. Spray a mug with no-stick cooking spray. Combine 1/3 cup of your blended cake mixture with 3 tablespoons water; stir well.

3. Microwave 60 seconds. That’s it! Enjoy with whipped cream, fresh strawberries, chocolate chips and/or vanilla ice cream.

Ready to add a devilish decoration or two? Here are some sweet and spooky variations, just for Halloween.

Idea #1: Witch’s Brew Mug Cake

Witch’s Brew Mug Cake

How to Make It:

Combine your 1/3 cup cake mixture and 3 tablespoons water in a black mug. (Bonus points if you can find a cauldron mug like this little cutie that I snagged at Target for $5 this year!) Microwave 60 seconds, and then top with canned green vanilla frosting, candy eyeballs and round sprinkles. Insert a pretzel stick as the “spoon” for your witch’s brew!

Idea #2: Yummy Mummy Mug Cake

How to Make It: Lightly press two candy eyes into the top of your warm mug cake. Pipe canned vanilla or cream cheese frosting in strips across the top, criss-crossing the layers for a bandage effect. You’ll have a cute and creepy dessert … all wrapped up!

Idea #3: Worms & Dirt Mug Cake

Worms & Dirt Mug Cake

How to Make It: For a frightfully fun kid favorite, spoon 1 chocolate or chocolate-vanilla pudding cup over the top of a prepared mug cake, spreading to cover completely. Top with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (aka Oreos®) for “dirt” and a few traditional or sour gummy worms.

Best of all? Your mug cakes will be ready to enjoy or start decorating in only a minute … so you’ll even have time to sit for a spell!

Happy Halloween, friends!

Jen

Bonus tip: After Halloween, make yourself a warm chocolate mug cake topped with ice cream and chopped peanut butter cups, Twix®, Snickers® or other chocolate bars. It’s a great way to use leftover candy, too!
