Bourbon Bacon Hot Dogs

Ah, the joys of summertime. Sipping a cold drink. Basking in the warm sunshine. And breathing in the scent of fresh-cut grass.

In Minnesota and North Dakota, we often joke that winter lasts for six months of the year. (Don’t laugh – it’s only a SLIGHT exaggeration.) But to be honest, I think all of those months of subzero temperatures make us appreciate the fleeting beauty of summer even more.

At our house, we watch the kids play in the backyard and fire up the grill almost every night. It keeps the kitchen cool, it involves less clean-up AND it magically makes everything taste better. But how do you avoid making the same ol’ hot dogs and burgers?

Well, today’s simple recipe is one of our new favorites. These salty, smoky bacon-wrapped dogs are drizzled with our Bayou Bourbon™ Glaze. Try ’em topped with baked onion rings for a “rodeo” twist (my husband’s vote!), or make a BLT version with fresh veggies like mixed greens, diced tomatoes and even sliced avocado (my personal fave!).

It’s like summertime on a bun. So come on … take a bite!

Bourbon Bacon Hot Dogs

Ingredients

  • 8 beef franks
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • Toppings (onion rings, mixed greens, diced tomato, sliced avocados)

Directions

Preheat grill or grill pan to medium heat. Wrap each beef frank with a slice of bacon, securing the ends with toothpicks if necessary. Grill, turning frequently, about 10-13 minutes or until bacon is slightly crisp and cooked through. Brush with Bayou Bourbon™ Glaze during the last minute of cooking. Serve on sliced hot dog buns, and drizzle with additional Bayou Bourbon™ Glaze. For “rodeo dogs,” top with baked onion rings; for “BLT dogs,” top with mixed greens, diced tomatoes and sliced avocados.

Tips and Hints

  • Be sure to add your Bayou Bourbon™ Glaze during the last minute of cook time or it will burn due to the brown sugar in the sauce.
  • While homemade onion rings would be delicious, we cheated and baked the frozen variety with a sprinkle of Garlic Pepper Seasoning. They still turned out great!
  • Serve your hot dogs with ice-cold lemonade (or beer for the grown-ups!) and assorted fresh fruit.
